Shipment Weight and Dimensions

Lightweight items but large boxes still take up a lot of space. Therefore, the weight on the scale may be different from the weight used to calculate freight.

Let's get started weighs and measures the outermost three dimensions after packaging, then compare with the correct shipping service.

Example: a package measuring 60 × 50 × 50 cm weighs 10 kg. Using a volumetric divisor of 5,000 gives 30 kg. The higher weight is 30 kg, before rounding.
Illustrative example using a volumetric divisor of 5,000. Include bulges, protrusions and any pallet in your measurements.
01 · ACTUAL BALANCE

Actual weight in kg

Weighs the complete package, including goods, boxes and protective materials. For example: 10 kg.

02 · VOLUMETRIC WEIGHT

Volumetric weight in kg

Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ volumetric divisor. Example: 60 × 50 × 50 ÷ 5,000 = 30 kg.

03 · CHARGE RECONCILIATION

Get the larger number

With comparison applicable service: 10 kg < 30 kg → take 30 kg, then apply rounding and min.

Confirm correct method: Express services may use a divisor of 5,000; air cargo may use 6,000. LCL sea freight uses CBM/W/M as specified in the quote — CBM is m³, not kg. Gia Phú must confirm the divisor and rules that apply to your shipment.

Both packages weigh 10 kg, but their dimensions differ: 30 × 25 × 25 cm and 60 × 50 × 50 cm. The larger package occupies 8 times as much space.
Illustration is for volume comparison, does not depict actual loading.
WHY DOES VOLUMETRIC WEIGHT MATTER?

Light cargo can still take up a lot of space in the cabin

Airplanes have limits both load capacity and cargo space. A box of teddy bears, blankets or clothes packed too large may be light but takes up space for more compact packages.

Volumetric weight reflects the space a package occupies. Where the service compares the two weights, charges are based on the greater of the actual weight and volumetric weight.

Compact size: 30 × 25 × 25 cm

Practical scale 10 kg · Volumetric weight using a divisor of 5,000: 3.75 kg → compare and get 10 kg.

Large package: 60 × 50 × 50 cm

Also heavy 10 kg, but the volume is folded 8 times · Convert: 30 kg → compare and get 30 kg.

These examples use a divisor of 5,000, before rounding and minimum charges. Well-fitted packaging can reduce volume, while still providing sufficient protection.

Test calculation for one package

Enter the outer dimensions of your packed shipment. This calculator illustrates the calculation; it does not confirm rates or acceptance conditions.

Initial example: 0.15 CBM · 30 kg volumetric weight · 30 kg chargeable weight using a divisor of 5,000, before rounding.

WEIGHT CALCULATION

Weight and volume: understand correctly before sending

A lightweight yet bulky package that still takes up a lot of space. Therefore, the service can compare the actual weight with the volumetric weight to determine the basis for charging.

1. Actual weight

Is the number of kilograms weighed of the complete package, including goods, boxes, dunnage materials and reinforcement or pallets when available. Please weigh after packaging.

2. Volume weight

Is the number of kilograms converted from the three outermost dimensions of the package. With dimensions in cm: Length × Width × Height ÷ division factor. Use the divisor specified for the confirmed service.

Coefficients and units need to be distinguished

Plan Reference calculation Note
International express delivery Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 5,000 = kg converted For example, DHL Express uses a divisor of 5,000. This does not automatically apply to every service.
Air Cargo Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 6,000 = kg converted DHL Global Forwarding air freight terms refer to a divisor of 6,000. Check the divisor in your specific quote.
Seaway LCL CBM = Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 1,000,000 If the quote applies the W/M ratio of 1 CBM: 1 ton, compare the CBM with the actual weight ÷ 1,000. Minimum rates and other fees according to quote.
Road/other services According to the shipping unit's regulations No single divisor applies to every route and carrier.

Don't be mistaken: CBM is m³, not kg. Dividing the volume in cm³ by 1,000 gives the equivalent number of kg in the ratio 1 CBM : 1,000 kg; That is not the formula for calculating CBM and is not automatically the way to calculate charges for all Sea routes.

Example: package 60 × 50 × 50 cm, weight 10 kg

Volume: 150,000 cm³ = 0.15 CBM.

With a divisor of 5,000: 150,000 ÷ 5,000 = 30 kg. Compared to the actual 10 kg, the charging basis is 30 kg before the separate rule.

With a divisor of 6,000: the result is 25 kg. Confirm the correct divisor before calculating.

Sea shipping example by W/M

Same package as above: 0.15 CBM and 10 ÷ 1,000 = 0.01 tons. If a 1:1 W/M ratio is applied, the larger value is 0.15 units W/M.

Results do not apply lot minimums and fees. Do not infer price from CBM or kg only.
